About

Burgos is a provincial capital in Castilla y León, and one of the larger cities on the Camino Francés — about 281 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

The walking line passes through the historic centre by the cathedral, then continues west toward the open meseta.

On the Camino Francés

Burgos is the first of the great Castilian cities on this route. The cathedral is not only the city’s landmark: it is a World Heritage site in its own right, inscribed in 1984, on the streets the Camino uses through the centre.

After Burgos the Francés stretches across the meseta. The next published place, Castrojeriz, is a place-to-place span along the certified line, not a suggested day’s walk.

Into the city

Walkers reach the old town by the river-gate of Santa María and pass the cathedral on the through-route. San Nicolás de Bari stands beside it. Las Huelgas and the Cartuja de Miraflores are off that line; they are listed below so the distinction stays clear.

The previous CaminoFinder place is San Juan de Ortega. West of Burgos the next published place is Castrojeriz.

Pilgrim information

Castilla y León and the city publish tourist information offices in Burgos, including Calle Nuño Rasura 7 and Plaza Alonso Martínez 7. The cathedral is the main Camino landmark in the historic centre.
