About

Iruña / Pamplona is the capital of Navarra, and the first city on the Camino Francés after the Pyrenees. Both names belong to the same place.

The Camino uses the historic centre. The city sits about 65 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on CaminoFinder’s certified line.

On the Camino Francés

Pamplona is the first large city after the pass from France. For walkers coming from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port or Orreaga / Roncesvalles, the streets of the old town are where the mountain start becomes an urban Camino.

The municipal pilgrim centre presents the city as a first major stop after the Pyrenees. This page is a Francés place guide, not a general city tourism article.

Through the city

The walking line uses the old town and its walls. The cathedral stands on those streets. The citadel is a short walk off the Camino, not on the through-route itself.

The previous CaminoFinder place is Orreaga / Roncesvalles. The next is Puente la Reina / Gares. Those spans are place-to-place distances, not suggested walking days.

Pilgrim information

Ultreia, the municipal pilgrim welcome and interpretation centre, is at Calle Mayor 20 in the old town. The city council says credentials are sold and stamped there, with information for continuing the Francés through Navarra.

Confirm current opening times locally; they are not listed here. Registered lodging from the Navarra tourism register appears further down this page.
