About
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is where CaminoFinder’s Camino Francés begins. The town sits in the French Basque country, in Pyrénées-Atlantiques, at the foot of the climb toward Navarra.
The walled upper town and the faubourg d’Espagne still mark the way out toward Spain. The next published place on this route is Orreaga / Roncesvalles.
On the Camino Francés
This is CaminoFinder’s starting point for the Francés, not a rule that every pilgrimage must begin here. The Cathedral’s Pilgrim Office in Santiago says there is no compulsory starting town; on the French Way it names Orreaga / Roncesvalles as a traditional example.
Saint-Jean is still a major place to begin a walk into Spain. French routes toward Santiago have long gathered in this corner of the Pyrenees before the climb into Navarra. CaminoFinder does not publish those French ways as separate Caminos.
Leaving town
Walkers leave through the upper town and the faubourg d’Espagne, the suburb that faces the Spanish climb. Porte Saint-Jacques is the gate on that side of the walls.
From here the next CaminoFinder place is Orreaga / Roncesvalles. The distance between them is a place-to-place span along the certified line, not a suggested day’s walk.
Pilgrim information
The Accueil des pèlerins is at 39 rue de la Citadelle, in Maison Laborde. The town hall says the pilgrim credential is issued there, together with the town seal that records a passage through Saint-Jean.
There is also a tourist office in the town. Opening hours change and are not listed here; confirm them on the spot. Registered French lodging is not shown on this page.
Getting here
Arrival by train, air and coach is on a separate logistics page. This guide is the town, the Accueil and the start of the mapped Francés.

Things to see
Anciens remparts
The historic walls of the upper town and the faubourg d’Espagne, where the Camino leaves toward Spain. The French Monument historique listing also records Vauban’s citadel of 1685 and later work on Porte Saint-Jacques.
Porte Saint-Jacques
One of the five pointed-arch gates of the upper-town walls, facing the climb toward Navarra. It is a component of UNESCO World Heritage list no. 868 (Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, 1998) — the gate, not the whole town.
