About

Sarria is a town in Lugo, Galicia, and a busy hub on the Galician stretch of the Camino Francés — about 649 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

From here about 114 km remain to Santiago de Compostela along CaminoFinder’s certified Francés geometry.

On the Camino Francés

Sarria is a common starting town for people walking a shorter stretch of the Francés. Many begin here because the remaining certified distance to Santiago is more than 100 km.

The Cathedral’s Pilgrim Office does not name a compulsory starting town. On the French Way it gives Orreaga / Roncesvalles as a traditional example.

The Compostela, and what this distance is

The Compostela is a Cathedral document, issued at the Pilgrim Office. It is not calculated from CaminoFinder’s kilometre figures.

The Cathedral currently grants the Compostela to those who walk or ride on horseback at least 100 continuous kilometres toward Santiago on the same recognized Camino, finishing with at least the approach to the Cathedral. Bicycle pilgrims must cover 200 kilometres under the same conditions. If the pilgrimage began outside Spain on a recognized Camino, at least 70 of those continuous kilometres must be in Spain.

The Office allows the walk to be done in stages if they stay in chronological and geographical order. Anyone covering only the minimum distance should stamp at the start and end of each stretch, with dates.

Along CaminoFinder’s certified Francés geometry, about 114 km remain from Sarria to Santiago. That measured distance is why many walkers begin a shorter Francés here. The Cathedral sets Compostela eligibility separately, at the Pilgrim Office.

Galician official tourism states that the Pilgrim Office uses Sarria or Barbadelo as the walking counting-start on the Francés, and Ponferrada for bicycle pilgrims. That is Xunta wording.

Along the route

The previous place on CaminoFinder’s main Francés line is O Cebreiro. Samos lies on a variant, not on that default line. The next published place is Portomarín.

After the town itself, the Francés continues through the same municipality past the church of Santiago de Barbadelo.

Pilgrim information

The municipal tourist office is in the former prison on Rúa da Mercé. Confirm current hours on the spot; they are not listed here.

Registered Galician lodging is not shown on this page.

Getting here

Sarria is a joining point on the Camino Francés, not the beginning of the route. How to reach the town by rail, coach and airport is on the logistics page.

Things to see

  • Fortaleza de Sarria

The fortress remnant in the town.

  • Igrexa de Santiago de Barbadelo

A church in the same municipality, on the Camino Francés after Sarria. Galician official tourism also names Barbadelo, with Sarria, as a walking counting-start on the Francés.
